Black & Decker PHV1800CB Cordless Handheld Vacuum Review

by Mike Duncan

I’ve been wanting a quality handheld vacuum cleaner after going through a couple of duds recently. I bought a couple of dirt cheap handhelds (pun intended), but as they say, you get what you pay for. I realized I needed something small with the ability to suck up a lot of dirt and dust in those harder-to-reach areas, and decided to upgrade. With a good price and the nice reviews I saw, I decided to give Black and Decker’s PHV1800CB Pivoting Nose Cordless Vacuum a whirl.

This cordless vacuum has a 10-position pivoting nozzle as well as a nifty cleaning system, 3-stage filtration and is energy-star approved. It also folds in half for storage, and it comes with upholstery brush, small crevice tool, and wall-mountable charging base.

I’ve owned Oreck and Dyson vacuums in the past, but wanted something more economical for a handheld. I can live without a sexy expensive edition of these brands if the vacuum can do its job properly, as this is mainly a tool I plan to use occasionally. I mainly wanted it to be able to clean my car’s upholstery and reach places that my traditional vacuum can’t squeeze into. All in all, this is a great versatile product for the money. When I first tried it, I was a little taken aback by the amount of noise that it made, but it picked up pretty much everything I pointed it at.

Also, it wasn’t a gross experience to clean the thing, though when you turn it off, you have to make sure the hose part is pointed up so that stuff doesn’t fall out of it. It says it can be wall-mounted, but unless you’re putting it up in a laundry room or something, I don’t think I’ll be displaying on my wall anytime soon. However, the charging station is still nice and easy to use.

  • Lightweight, nice design
  • Nice charging station, long-lasting charge
  • Foldable, easy to store away
  • Great suction
  • Easy to empty out
  • Affordable, middle-of-the-road price
  • Good warranty

  • Noisy
  • Light on the charging station doesn’t change when it’s fully charged

Despite its noisiness, though this is probably due to the amount of suction it’s capable of, I think this is a valuable investment for our home. I can clean my car, countertops, underneath furniture, etc. without breaking a sweat or going over the same place multiple times. Although the charge light doesn’t let you know when the vacuum has a full battery, it holds a charge for a long time and it isn’t that big a deal. I’d recommend this product to anyone interested in an affordable handheld that wants a vacuum with great suction.
